His life ended suddenly September 28, 1972 as James was driving an ambulance transporting a patient. He was killed instantly when he passed one vehicle and crashed into the back of a truck making a left turn on a farm road.

Members of the Westmoreland Volunteer Fire Department, Colonial Beach, Richmond County, Callao, and Tappahannock Rescue Squads served as honorary pallbearers.

James died at the age of 52 as he was working to help another.
