James Nicewarner began his fire and rescue service as a volunteer with the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad in 1967, and became a paramedic in 1972.
He held degrees in engineering and fire science, and was completing a degree in fire protection engineering at the time of his death. It was his hope to have a career in bio-medical engineering, designing medical equipment and artificial valves for use in transplant operations.
James died on June 26, 1977, as the result of injuries he received while transporting a trauma patient to Suburban Hospital. The Rockville Volunteer Fire Department medic unit was struck broadside by a drunk driver who failed to yield the right-of-way to the unit at an intersection. James was thrown from the unit and sustained fatal injuries.
