Lowell left in the middle of his yard work to respond to a pager call. As he was providing directions to the responding crew truck, his words were cut off. Lowell's wife, Nancy, found him leaning into his truck.

Lowell died of a heart attack on February 21, 1985, as he was preparing to respond to someone in need of care. He was 55 years old.

A charter member of the Ridgeway District Volunteer Rescue Squad, Lowell received the Squadman of the Year award in 1984. Additionally, he was active in Grace Baptist Church as a deacon, trustee, and Sunday School teacher with a 22-year record of perfect attendance.

Lowell was a member of the Fontraine Ruritan Club and president of Custom Floor Covering. In addition to his wife, Lowell was survived by his son, Barry.
