When standby calls came in at the Danville Crew, Gerald was the first to volunteer, and it was on a standby call that Gerald lost his life.
As Gerald and two other crew members were en route to standby at a local football game, the crew's station wagon crashed into the unlighted rear of a logging truck.
Gerald died 16 days later on October 29, 1967 from injuries he received in the accident. He was 27 years old. Gerald had been employed as a linotype machinist by the Register Publishing Company.
He left behind his wife, Glenda, and three daughters, Charisse, Elizabeth, and Lorie.
